The floodgate in Henne Mølleå is owned by Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation, which also owns the area around Filsø near Varde.
The purpose of the lock is to protect Filsø from high tide from the North Sea and the salt water intrusion that destroys the flora and fauna of the 915 ha lake. The new lock can be operated remotely via the Internet and replaces the 44-year-old and worn-out lock at Porsmosevej.
The lock was constructed with cladding and sheet piling made from FSC-certified Azobe – Red Ironwood Tree (Lophira alata) from West Africa. In addition, FSC-certified Greenheart (Chlorocardium rodiei) sheet piles from South America were used. Both types of wood are naturally very resistant to decay and are commonly used in port construction.
